Listen Up To Will Sexton!
Will Sexton is an artist developed by the unique diversity of the Austin music scene, which placed him on stage with local legends before he’d lived out his first decade. Many of the sounds of his childhood still resonate in his current work.
Will has a wide range of credits as a musician, producer and songwriter, from collaborations with Waylon Jennings, to psychedelic pioneer Roky Erikson and punk legend Johnny Thunders. Will has written for MCA and Almo Irving, and recorded for MCA, A&M, and Zoo Entertainment. Will was in the New Folk Underground with David Baerwald, which resulted in the co-produced (w/ David Kitay) Lost Highway release Here Comes the New Folk Underground.
His new record, Move The Balance, showcases his original songs, groove and sound. Available NOW on iTunes, it's destined to find a permanent home in your player.

Kinky Friedman Unleashes Single, Announces West Coast Tour
For the first time in a generation - no, TWO generations - Kinky Friedman has an A-Side, and he's releasing it in a twenty-first century medium. Recorded as part of Kinky's Classical Snatches From Europe live CD, "Craft Of The Songwriter," featuring original Texas Jewboy, Little Jewford, is a hilarious look at how Kinky writes his material. Despite the fact that Kinky does not own a computer and considers the internet "satanic," "Craft Of The Songwriter" is being released in electronic formats only, thus proving Kinky may have finally departed the twentieth century. "Craft Of The Songwriter" will be made available to community, public, AAA and Americana stations to help kick off Kinky's first west coast tour in twenty years, the 'Go West Young Kinky Tour Of 2010,' which starts in Vancouver on July 26th. CLICK HERE to listen to the track, and for all upcoming tour dates. CLICK HERE to read this exceptional Bloomberg article. With an electronic single and a young man's tour upcoming, can a Kinky Friedman Twitter account be far behind?

Due out in early 2011, Morlix will couple the record's release with the upcoming Blaze Foley documentary. Stay tuned for more!

Listen Up To Margo Valiante!
From the first note to the last, Margo Valiante's voice could stop a train in its tracks, hush a hearty and noisy pub, and even inspire the most hardened cynic fall in love with romance.

Margo Valiante’s new release, I Can’t Pray, recorded with famed Austin guitarist, Rich Brotherton (Robert Earl Keen), keyboardist Riley Osbourn and her Austin-based band, is a brilliant collection of songs and soul. The EP’s title track, "I Can’t Pray" is, in part, Valiante's response to the tune "Moonshiner" by Roscoe Holcomb - Margo tries to find the meaning behind this song that has always moved her, particularly in his line “Give me greenbacks when I’m hard up and religion when I die.” In I Can’t Pray, Valiante unearths the depths of life's passions with haunting lyrics and a powerhouse voice that is absolutely spiritual. The emotion is strong and palpable throughout the EP, and will leave the listener forever mezmorized.

James McMurtry Drills Deeper Into the BP Oil Disaster
James McMurtry recently shared his thoughts on the BP Oil Spill in a blog for Blurt:
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - BP conceded Thursday that more oil than it estimated is gushing into the Gulf of Mexico as heavy crude washed into Louisiana's wetlands for the first time, feeding worries and uncertainty about the massive monthlong spill.
"Let's get something clear. BP knew, from the beginning, exactly how much oil that blowout was capable of spilling. BP is a modern oil company. Modern oil companies conduct extensive seismographic tests before committing the resources to actually drill. They can't afford a dry hole under a mile of water. They knew what was down there before they drilled the well. They had already successfully drilled several wells in that field and they know what each well produces.

Equally troubling, is that all of BP's efforts since the accident have been geared not towards plugging the leak, but rather towards recovering as much oil as possible. They talk of maybe trying a "junk shot", filling the non-functional blowout preventer with golf balls or old tires, but they haven't tried it. Perhaps they're afraid the junk shot could make matters worse, a valid fear. But it is interesting that the only procedures BP has actually tried have involved tankers. The recovery boxes froze up and failed before the oil reached the tanker. Now they've managed to insert a skinny pipe into the fat pipe that's leaking and siphon off a fraction of the oil. I guess they figure that's better than nothing. Meanwhile, the livelihoods of people who've worked the Gulf for generations are being ruined as BP officials stall and evade in a vain quest to save face and profit.

Republicans are trying to lay blame on Obama. The "drill baby drill" crowd says Obama should have imposed tighter regulations on offshore drilling. Imagine the shit storm they'd have kicked up if he had tried such a thing before the spill."

Soon after this blog was posted, McMurtry flew over the spill...CLICK HERE to read his latest account.

Listen Up To Susan Cowsill!
Lighthouse, Susan Cowsill's second solo album, once again embodies the timeless qualities of heart, soul and craft that are already known to anyone familiar with Cowsill’s solo debut Just Believe It.

Susan first entered the pop-culture spotlight at the age of eight, as the youngest member of the ’60s musical family The Cowsills. In adulthood, as a member of the beloved alt-pop supergroup the Continental Drifters, she reemerged as a vocalist and songwriter of remarkable depth and insight. In 2005, Susan made an inspiring solo debut with Just Believe It. But the album’s creative triumph was overshadowed by the intrusion of real-life events — namely the deaths of Susan’s brothers Billy and Barry, and the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, which temporarily displaced Susan and her family from her adopted hometown of New Orleans.

The tribulations of the past few years resonate throughout Lighthouse. Cowsill's new songs reflect the hard-won lessons of her recent experiences, while maintaining the unmistakable sense of optimism and spirituality that's always been at the heart of her work. That indomitable spirit is reflected in the infectious grit of such emotionally vivid originals as "ONOLA," "Sweet Bitter End," "The Way That It Goes" and "Avenue of the Indians," which features guest vocals by longtime friend and admirer Jackson Browne.

The new album will be in stores near you May 18, 2010. CLICK HERE to pre-order Lighthouse today

"Danny Barnes doesn't sound like anybody else. I was knocked out when I first heard him play and continue to be. Danny is wide open, unafraid, hungry for new ideas, and has a way of processing it all so that whatever comes in comes out all his own. The line between where he's been and where he's going is unbroken. The roots are stong. He lives the music. He's not making this stuff up. It is his story. Danny is an inspiration to me and it has been a privilege to witness his work grow and come together in such a unique way. It's all here. The real deal." - Bill Frisell

Listen Up To Terri Hendrix!
Try to pigeonhole the music of Terri Hendrix, and you're in for a challenge. Her songs range in style from folk to pop to blues to jazz and all points in between. Not suprisingly, she covers just as much expansive ground in her writing. But even when her songs dip deep and fearlessly confront the truths of life, the heart and society, they still reveal her belief that it takes just as much courage to embrace and celebrate the light as it does to wallow in the blues. Hence the title of her upcoming album, Cry Till You Laugh - and her reputation for always putting on an engaging and energetic live show that ultimately leaves listeners feeling good and spiritually charged.
It's a Book Too...
In addition to her new CD, Terri will release a book of essays about life, music, and her role as one of the pioneers in the independent music movement. These essays are culled from more than a decade's worth of the essays that Terri has shared with her fans via her mailing list and website. Some will be old favorites, others will be brand new, and exclusive to this release, but all of the essays tie into the songs and themes featured on this new album.

Good things come to those who wait. Every once in a while, you may even find a rough cut diamond glistening in that shovelful of coal, or a perfect pearl when you crack into that crusty oyster shell. Listen Up To The Mystiqueros!
The collection of roads traveled by Walt Wilkins, Bill Small, John Greenberg and Ray Rodriguez - the men that would ultimately become The Mystiqueros - represents a journey paved with soulful stories and poignant melodies. And now, at long last, they will release that collection in their new record, Agave (Blue Boot Records). Agave is The Mystiqueros evocative second release, following 2007's much celebrated Diamonds in the Sun. Agave uniquely captures what The Mystiqueros are all about - great songs, inventive arrangements, cool guitars, and The Mystiqueros famous spiritual harmonies. Available April 5, Agave is destined to become a gem in your collection.

Gurf Morlix Pays Tribute To Blaze Foley
This past winter, Gurf Morlix escaped the cold, cold world and found refuge in the studio, where he recorded an extraordinary tribute to longtime friend, Blaze Foley. Foley was a larger-than-life notoriously excentric singer-songwriter, who wrote the most outlandish...as well as some of the most heartbreaking songs before his untimely death in 1989. On the forthcoming release, Morlix captures the haunted troubadour with an insight that no other could possibly have. Scheduled to hit the shelves this fall, Morlix plans to couple the record's release with the upcoming Blaze Foley documentary. Stay tuned for more!

Listen Up To The Drive-By Truckers!
It seems simplest to understand Patterson Hood as the director and/or producer of low-budget films...Each is released in record album form under the name Drive-By Truckers and features a closely held assortment of friends and combatants. Ten albums, so far, going back to 1998’s Gangstabilly, plus two more under Hood’s own name, have delighted the critics and enthralled fans. Each release filled with carefully told, fiercely rendered short subjects. Cinematic songs. The Truckers brand new release, The Big To-Do, ushers in a new relationship with ATO. And it offers up the curious, abiding peace which only great rock can still bring. Be sure to catch the Truckers LIVE. CLICK HERE to check out Drive-By Truckers' debut performance on The Late Show with David Letterman.
Check out what folks are saying about The Big To-Do:
"KILLER SONGS" - Rolling Stone
"America's greatest rock band." - Billboard
"Drive-By Truckers are the best rock band in America" CNN.com
"One of the first great rock albums of 2010" - Under The Radar
"The Truckers do here what they do better than almost anyone else - blow the fucking roof off" - Uncut
"Like an episode of intervention with guitars" - Spin

Danny Barnes Shakes Things Up
Danny Barnes is touring the nation this month with Legendary Shack Shakers, Trampled By Turtles, and many more! CLICK HERE for tour dates. Last month, Danny Barnes made a splash in Austin during SXSW, performing countless showcases, and appearing live on KUT, FOX, KGSR, KVET, and Daytrotter. He even took his innovative "folktronics" system for a demo at Austin's Apple Store! Danny wowed audiences at every show - just as he did at the International Folk Alliance convention in February (CLICK HERE to listen to Barnes' Voice of America interview direct from FA 2010).
Check out what folks are saying about Danny Barnes:
"I have been seeing more and more clearly that what makes music work is a combination of balancing acts. By staying on the cusp between traditional and innovative, relaxed and aggressive, heartfelt and humorous, simple and sophisticated, essence can be conjured. Sometimes musicians seem to screw up and mix the vapid aspects of different genres, but in the case of a Danny Barnes, one senses the urgency that can come from acknowledgeing what is universal around that cuspy point." - Mike Gordon
"Music needs to change, grow, and evolve, and be constantly inspired through the work of the people that create it. Thank God we have a man like Danny Barnes leading the way...a true hero and resounding voice to those who are smart enough to listen." - Jeff Austin (Yonder Mountain String Band)
"Danny is truly one of a kind. His take on the banjo baffles me. His ability to bring characters to life in his songwriting inspires me. The songs on Pizza Box get stuck in my head so much so, that I randomly blurt them out in strange places. This angers me. The only way to get them out of my head is to learn them, play them on stage and record them. So I do. Hey Danny, checks in the mail." - Keller Williams

Check out this excerpt from Stephen King's Under the Dome:
"And she sang, in a small but tuneful voice: 'It's a small town, you know what I mean?'
Barbie smiled a little and sang the next line back to her: 'Just a small town, baby, and we all support the team.' It was from an old James McMurtry song that had the previous summer gained a new and mysterious two-month vogue on a couple of western Maine c&w stations. Not WCIK, of course; James McMurtry was not the sort of artist Jesus Radio supported."

The Pug Buzz

While he was in town for SXSW, Joe Pug was Ray Wylie Hubbard's guest on KNBT's Roots and Branches of Americana Music - check it out HERE.
Check out what folks are saying about Joe Pug:
“Throughout Messenger, Pug demonstrates his understanding that life is full of battlefields, and that injuries sustained on the fiercest one of all- our endlessly bombarded, shrapnel-pierced hearts—only have one cure: more pedal steel.” 9.1 – Paste
“In the new batch on Messenger—his first full-length—he turns unblurred thought and crisp imagery toward more introspective territory, to good result.” - American Songwriter
“Pug is a fine musician, but his strongest asset is his writing, and his words cast the starkest shadows against a spare backdrop.” - Washington City Paper
“His hypnotic wordplay lingers with the gut-punching imagery of self-realization.” - Blurt Magazine
“At a point in time when most acoustic guitar-strumming troubadours are tricking up their tunes with neo-psychedelic swirls, electronic frippery, or some other such device, Pug plays it straight-ahead, with a delivery that brings to mind John Prine, and lyrics full of poetic but never overripe imagery.” - All Music Guide
“Though he’s established himself as an acoustic troubadour with sharp lyrical insight and a penchant for solid tradition-based songcraft, Messenger comes on like a full-on pop tune. It's rootsy, to be sure, but primarily it's irresistibly melodic, with guest Darren Spitzer’s harmonies lifting the song to another level.” - eMusic

A handful of the new songs have already been premiered live, and Terri is hard at work finishing the other half of the project — a classy book of essays about life, music, and being a pioneer in the independent music movement which will be part of the package for the new CD. These essays are culled from more than a decade's worth of journal entries that Terri has shared with her fans via her mailing list and website. Some will be old favorites, others will be brand new and exclusive to this release, but all of the essays will tie into the songs and themes featured on the album.

"Danny Barnes is no hologram. He's completely real. I don't know how else to put it. His kind of authenticity is thrilling to witness. Larger than life, earnest, and humble as you'll ever find. They don't make people like that much any more. In a certain sense I think of Bill Monroe and Louis Armstrong. Maybe not that influential but cut from that cloth. Completely compelling and fearless, leaning into a deep well, whether he's playing three finger style banjo, or clawhammer, or singing, or writing tunes...an American original." - Tony Trischka

Check Out What Folks Are Saying About Jenni Finlay Promotions:
"Jenni Finlay works a record with passion, integrity and a deep coolness. She got me to #1 in 4 weeks. Proof enough." Ray Wylie Hubbard

"Every now and then you meet someone that does a killer job and is also a combination of funny/smart/nice. That's how I think of Jenni. It's been so great working with her. I can't say enough nice things about her. Thank you ma'am!" Danny Barnes

"Jenni supports the artists and radio stations that she works with, including this one, with commitment, passion, creativity, integrity, reliability and timeliness that is unsurpassed. And, when she gets behind an artist, well, I KNOW that they are worthy of my attention. It seems that the common thread among her artists is their individuality -- they all have personalities that are larger than life and simply must be heard. Quite frankly, if you're not spinning Ray Wylie Hubbard, James McMurtry and the other artists she supports, then you're not Americana." Warren Catlett, Radio Free Americana

"Long before I first met Jenni at the Non-COMMvention I was a fan. Her clients represent a virtual "who's who" of prominent and front-running musicians. The combination of this, her incredible personable manner and long list of contacts in both commercial and non-commercial radio make her representation most effective when it comes to serious radio airplay.” Cliff Anderson, WSGE

"Jenni should write a book about record promotion and it should be required reading for all that express interest in joining the industry." Justin Frazell - 95.9 The Ranch

DANNY BARNES Sirius XM Interview/Performance
Tuesday, February 2 (9-10 pm ET)
OUTLAW COUNTRY SIRIUS 63/XM 12
A singer/songwriter with "Delusions of Banjer," Danny Barnes left his native Texas and his band the Bad Livers a decade ago and headed for the relative shade of Seattle. Since then, he's taken his banjo playing in unexpected directions, picking with jazzmen Bill Frisell and jam master Dave Matthews, who recorded Barnes’ new CD, Pizza Box, at his studio in Virginia, played on it and released it on his label, ATO Records. Barnes visits with Meredith for a live studio performance of some of his new songs and a chat about banjo, blogging and bands.
Rebroadcast: Thursday, February 4 11 pm ET.

Listen Up To Matt The Electrician!
Once upon a time, there was a young man named Matt Sever. He lived in Austin, TX, and worked as a journeyman electrician. Every morning, when it was still dark outside, he would go to work and wire houses all day long in the blistering Texas heat. When he would head home again, it was dark outside. And then, sometimes, with no time to shower or change his clothes, he would go straight to the bars and nightclubs of Austin to play his songs for whomever would listen. He would apologize for his appearance, and explain to the audience that he was an electrician, and he found a certain nobility in this, even if no one wanted to sit too close to the stage. So they called him Matt The Electrician, and he did not mind this, for he was proud of himself, for there is no shame in a hard days work. But eventually, he quit his job as an electrician, to spend more time writing and playing songs, and the name stuck with him... because everyone needs an electrician sometimes.
At long last, Matt the Electrician celebrates the national release of his sixth album, Animal Boy. Unlike his prior releases, which were recorded live and in-the-moment in a couple of days, Animal Boy was patiently and purposefully written and recorded over the course of a year. Matt co-produced the record with Mark Addison (Guy Forsyth, Bob Schneider, Ian Moore) at The Aerie Studio, and while he brought in some amazing musicians (Scrappy Jud Newcomb, Freedy Johnston, Southpaw Jones), Matt and Mark played most of the instruments themselves. The album is a tapestry of interesting characters and stories that plays like a stream of consciousness and promises to linger long in the listener's mind.

Joe Pug's Messenger IN STORES 2/16
Joe Pug will release Messenger on February 16, 2010 on Lightning Rod Records. Messenger is the long awaited follow-up to his highly acclaimed self-released EP Nation of Heat.
After playing over 200 shows, including runs with Steve Earle, M.Ward and Josh Ritter, Pug took to the studio to record his sophomore release. While Nation of Heat may have earned him the title of talent to watch, Messenger solidifies his spot among the finest songwriters of his generation. Pug’s soulful voice and lyrical vignettes guide listeners through the album’s ten tracks, none of which retreat to the comfortable and familiar haven where typical singer-songwriters rest.
With Messenger, Pug explores new territory, sneaking pedal steel guitar into “The Sharpest Crown” and backing “The Door is Always Open” with a powerhouse rhythm section. The album’s subtle beauty is showcased through the supporting cast Pug uses to expand his sound. However, he does not let his solo charm escape the album. Songs like “Bury Me Far (From My Uniform)” and “Unsophisticated Heart” make it obvious that Pug is still master of the-guy-and-the-guitar song.

Ben Kweller - New Record in the Works
Ben Kweller is in the studio this month, recording his upcoming album (scheduled to be released Spring 2010). Featuring long-time collaborators, Mark Stepro and Chris Morrissey, this project is rumored to become one of Kweller's finest. Stay tuned for more details!

Jason Eady Buzz
Jason Eady recently sat down for a one-on-one interview with The 9513 to share some interesting insight on his latest release, When The Money's All Gone. Eady explains "This time we made an effort to get back to that groove-based Southern gospel blues-influenced material. On my last couple of albums, I’ve played around with a lot of different styles. It was the producer, Kevin Welch, who wanted to take us back to our roots with what we used to do. This one was more based in that swampy feel. There were exceptions, though. There are a couple songs towards the end of the album that are more of the songwriter, folk, lyrical-based songs. I don’t think I’ll ever make one kind of record because I don’t listen to music that way. Even when I’m listening to my iPod, it might go from hip hop to bluegrass back to something fast. I get bored any other way. So the last thing I would do is make a record that was the same all the way through. But I think a blues-based Southern gospel influence is really the overall theme of this record." CLICK HERE for the full story.

Ray Wylie Hubbard Takes Americana By Storm
Congratulations to Ray Wylie Hubbard! In an amazing 3 weeks, his latest release, A. Enlightenment, B. Endarkenment (Hint, There Is No C.) has soared to the #4 spot on the Americana Music Chart (and it's still climbing!!) Check out what folks are saying about this incredible record:
“Think of it as mystical biker country. There’s a definite cosmic thrust to the plunked tin guitar notes, the jingle-jangle tambourine, tattooed rhythms and a red-dust harmonica wheezing a spectral recap of the mostly blues, kinda country melodies.” - American Songwriter
"In case the album cover - on which he's clutching a sword and his own severed head - didn't tip you off, Ray Wylie Hubbard's newest release is a little on the gritty side. Both cover and album are inspired by a quote from 13th century Persian poet Rumi, which states "Behead yourself. Dissolve your whole self into vision: become seeing, seeing, seeing." What Hubbard seems to be seeing here isn't too pretty, but it sure sounds good." - No Depression
"He peppers his songs liberally with concrete details that feed his arid settings, sweat-browed characters, lowdown blues riffs. But that doesn't keep him from playing up all the spiritual and sexual possibilities of his hard-livin', hard-drinkin', hard-lovin', hard-thinkin' country-blues-folk-rock." - Washington Post Express

Listen Up To Adam Carroll!
Texas troubadour Adam Carroll offers up a collection of fan favorites and new originals on Live in Flipnotics beautifully accompanied by enigmatic producer, Scrappy Jud Newcomb. Recorded and videotaped at Austin's intimate songwriter haven, Flipnotics Cafe, this must-have album gives the closest experience to "being there."
"...Beaver Nelson introduced me to Adam Carroll about ten years ago. His songs seem to move me more every time I hear them. The journey that takes place between "Home Again" and "Highway Prayer" is a fantastic, truthful and inspiring one. When I hear lines like "Summertime I've stood underneath the beer joint signs, even old Odysseus got bored from time to time" and "You're coming home, home again, you can tell 'em all where you've been," I feel the same excitement and call of adventure that makes me want to hit the road, anytime I'm lucky enough to be asked. It's an honor to play music with people like Adam. He writes with dignity about the people and places he's seen on his journey, which of course is a never ending quest. We're lucky when people like him light the path a little brighter." - Scrappy Jud Newcomb

Danny Barnes On The Mountain
Danny will appear on the legendary Mountain Stage in Charleston, WV on February 14th to perform with good friends Robert Earl Keen, Ray Wylie Hubbard, The Sweetback Sisters, and Darell Scott. Stay tuned for future broadcast dates! Tickets available online: www.mountainstage.org or by calling 800-594-TIXX. ADV Tickets:$12.50; DOS: $20.
“We’re thankful nobody told Danny Barnes you can’t play rock ’n’ roll on banjo — or maybe he just didn’t listen. With a boost from his pal Dave Matthews, Barnes’ album rocks and twangs, with the snap of pop and the doom of the blues. Most of the songs are short, character-based stories about life in the USA. That’s Matthews singing backup on the album opener “Caveman,” one of many songs about relationships.” - New York Post

Listen Up To Joe Pug!

Music aficionado, Bob Lefsetz, names James McMurtry's "We Can't Make it Here" his Song of the Decade:
"I try to have hope. Can't say that I achieve this state every day. But one thing that helps me get through is James McMurtry's "We Can't Make It Here". Not only my favorite song of the twenty first century, but my most played. With over 200 plays in my iTunes library on the computer I superseded in 2006, and over 100 more since. Sure, the lyrics are poignant, they're poetry. But there's a hypnotic groove that hooks me, that makes me want to play the song again and again....I truly believe James McMurtry's "We Can't Make It Here" is the best song of this nascent century. It doesn't only sound good, it's got something to say."

James McMurtry's "Bayou Tortous" is featured on Stephen King's Ultimate Playlist this year. A longtime McMurtry fan, King raves "Alt-country's poet laureate at his drily sarcastic best."

Have You Seen This Guitar?
On Wednesday, December 23rd, Walt Wilkins one-of-a-kind guitar disappeared in Austin, Texas. It's a Gibson Americana model, yellow pine facewood, with 2 rivet holes and 2 other circles in the wood, all surrounding the soundhole - a truly distinctive instrument. Keep your eyes peeled, and if you see it, or have any information about its whereabouts, CLICK HERE and let us know!

Walt Wilkins' latest release, Vigil, is now available HERE. Started as a way to preserve some of Walt's recent songs that he felt were gifts from above, the record was completely funded by a benefactor who would not accept repayment. Therefore, in this spirit, Walt has generously decided not to profit at all from its sales. All proceeds will go to The Longevity Foundation, an organization dedicated to the research into treatment of cancer, parkinsons, alzheimers, ATF, and many more.
